Louisville Metro's smoke-free ordinance bans smoking in enclosed workplaces and within reasonable distance of building entrances. Vaping is included. Metro Parks restricts smoking near playgrounds and athletic fields.
Louisville Metro adopted a comprehensive smoke-free workplace ordinance in 2008, prohibiting smoking inside all enclosed public places and workplaces, including bars and restaurants. Outdoors, smoking is restricted near building entrances, air intakes, and operable windows under the same chapter. Electronic cigarettes and vapor products were added by amendment. Metro Parks rules ban smoking near playgrounds, splash pads, athletic fields, and within Waterfront Park designated zones. Hospitals and university campuses (UofL) maintain stricter, fully tobacco-free perimeters under their own policies.
Smoking in prohibited areas can result in $50-$500 civil citations. Business operators who fail to enforce face escalating fines and potential occupational-license review for repeat noncompliance.
