Montgomery, AL Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Sec. 27-12, carried into the current code from the 1972 traffic ordinance, restricts wheeled recreational devices to sidewalks and off-street areas rather than the travel lane. Its exact text bars 'any person upon roller skates, or riding in or by means of any coaster, toy vehicle or similar device' from going upon any roadway, a phrase broad enough to sweep in a modern skateboard even though the ordinance predates the word entering common traffic-code use. The one carve-out is crossing the street: a rider may cross on a marked crosswalk, and while doing so is treated exactly like a pedestrian, gaining pedestrian rights of way but also taking on pedestrian duties such as yielding where required under Sec.

27-343. Outside a crosswalk crossing, riding a skateboard, coaster or similar toy vehicle in the travel lane itself is not permitted anywhere in the city. This sits alongside the sidewalk bicycle rules in Sec. 27-305, which separately require a cyclist on a sidewalk to yield to pedestrians and signal before passing, showing the code's general approach of keeping wheeled recreational traffic off the roadway and deferential to pedestrians wherever it does mix with foot traffic.
