Tustin, CA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Tustin City Code Section 5343, added by Ord. No. 786 in 1979 and amended by Ord. No. 1412 in 2012, regulates skateboarding across three settings. On private commercial property, skateboarding becomes unlawful only once the owner, lessee, or operator posts at least one sign, no smaller than twenty-two by seventeen inches with lettering at least one inch tall, stating that skateboarding is prohibited under Section 5343, posted in plain view in at least one prominent location. On public property, the Section flatly bans skateboarding in or on any city public parking structure and on or within the Civic Center/Library complex property, with no signage required.

On streets and public highways, skateboarding is unlawful citywide, but the ban does not extend to sidewalks, where skateboards must still yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at all times. The Section defines "skateboarding" broadly as riding any wheeled board propelled by human or mechanical power, and borrows the definition of "private commercial property" from Tustin City Code Section 6350(b). Because the street and public-property bans apply automatically while the private-property ban is sign-triggered, a rider's exposure in Tustin depends heavily on exactly where they are and whether a qualifying sign is posted.
