Wylie, TX Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 110-272 bans using, operating or riding skates, skateboards, manually propelled scooters or similar nonmotorized rolling devices on Ballard Street and the sidewalks along Ballard Street between Highway 78 and Brown Street, covering the heart of Wylie's historic downtown. The ordinance also makes it unlawful for a parent, natural or adoptive, or a court-appointed guardian or conservator, to allow a child under 18 to ride those devices in the same zone, and the code creates a rebuttable presumption that the parent allowed the ride if the child is caught doing so.

Adopted by Ordinance No. 2005-26 on June 28, 2005, the ban sits alongside the older, citywide rule in section 110-271, which keeps roller skates, coasters, skateboards and similar toy vehicles off any roadway except when crossing at a crosswalk. A violation of the Ballard Street ban is a Class C misdemeanor, and a conviction carries a fine of up to $500.00, well above the $200 ceiling most chapter 110 traffic offenses draw under the general penalty in section 1-13. The ordinance states its purpose is to promote safety and discourage property damage along the Ballard Avenue commercial strip, and it allows the municipal court to consider a deferred disposition under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure when circumstances warrant leniency.
