Redlands, CA Public Health Rules: Rodent Control (2026)

Redlands City Code § 6.24.060, "Rodent Infestations," states plainly: "Every person possessing any place that is infested with rodents, as soon as their presence comes to his knowledge shall at once proceed and continue in good faith to endeavor to exterminate and destroy the rodents, by poisoning, trapping and other appropriate means." The duty sits in Chapter 6.24, "Miscellaneous Animal Regulations," alongside related sanitation rules: burying a dead animal requires at least three feet of soil above the carcass (§ 6.24.050), and keeping livestock, fowl, or other nondomestic animals requires a permit whose renewal is conditioned on keeping the premises "in a clean and sanitary condition at all times" (§ 6.24.020(B)(5)).

Because rodent infestation is frequently tied to accumulated refuse or unmaintained property, § 6.24.060 also overlaps with the separate public-nuisance scheme in Chapter 8.04: § 8.04.070, "Insects, Vermin," and the general property-maintenance standard in § 8.04.190 both let the city treat an unremedied infestation as a public nuisance subject to the abatement, notice, and hearing procedure in that chapter. General violations of Title 6 that are not elsewhere declared a misdemeanor are enforced as an infraction under Chapter 6.24's penal provisions (§ 6.24.070), with the health officer authorized to require reporting of infected or diseased animals under § 6.24.110.
