Perth Amboy, NJ Short-Term Rentals: Taxes & Fees (2026)

The fee schedule is in § 369-3 of the Perth Amboy City Code, Chapter 369 (Short-Term Rentals), adopted by the City Council on 6-24-2024 as Ord. No. 2169-2024. The owner of property intended to serve as a short-term rental, or any agent acting for the owner, submits the City's permit application to the City Department of Code Enforcement together with an initial registration fee of $250. Under § 369-3C the fee is non-refundable, including when the application is denied, so a rejected applicant does not get it back.

The permit is valid for one year from the date of issuance. Section 369-3E requires renewal on an annual basis, keyed to the anniversary of the original permit issuance, by submitting a short-term rental permit application and a renewal registration fee of $200. Section 369-4A repeats that the application is submitted annually, under oath, with the non-refundable application fee set in § 369-3.

The fee attaches to the property and the owner, not to the calendar. Section 369-3F provides that the permit expires automatically when the property changes ownership, and a new initial application and registration fee is required if the new owner intends to use the property as a short-term rental. A new application is also required for any short-term rental that has had its permit revoked or suspended. Under § 369-6I a revoked property cannot be the subject of a new permit application for one year following the revocation.

The fee is not the only money condition. Section 369-3A(4) requires the applicant to be current with all city taxes, water and sewage charges, and § 369-3A(5) requires all fines or penalties issued by the Municipal Court for past code violations relating to the property, including penalties for failure to appear, to be satisfied in full before a permit issues.
