Bulloch County, GA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Bulloch County Zoning Ordinance § 1907(a), part of Article 19's Interstate Gateway Overlay (IGO) district rules, sets the standard for large signs aimed at I-16 traffic in unincorporated Bulloch County. A property that adjoins or lies within 660 feet of the I-16 right-of-way, and that carries a commercial, office or industrial use, is allowed one interstate sign in addition to the freestanding signs otherwise permitted under Article 22. The ordinance caps the sign at a total of 150 square feet of sign area for all signage on the structure, and the code as printed sets the height between a minimum of 120 feet and a maximum of 180 feet.

Spacing rules keep these signs from crowding a single stretch of highway: an interstate sign must sit at least 200 feet from any other interstate sign measured in all directions, and it cannot be closer than 50 feet to the I-16 right-of-way. Section 1907(c) adds that interstate signs, like billboards, may not be located within any minimum required front, side or rear yard for the underlying zoning district. Because these signs still fall under Article 22, an applicant must file a sign permit application with the zoning administrator, who has 15 business days to approve or deny it under Section 2203, and the permit lapses if construction has not started within six months.

Violations of the sign article carry a fine of up to $1,000 per Section 2214, with each day of a continuing violation charged as a separate offense and prosecution in the Magistrate Court of Bulloch County.
