South Fulton, GA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 706.07 confines billboards, defined elsewhere in the Article as signs between 72 and 672 square feet, to locations along and oriented toward state-numbered primary routes or national highways; a billboard cannot be built facing a purely local street. From there the section stacks several numeric buffers: at least 500 feet from any residential or AG-1 zoning district, a minimum 100-foot setback from the right-of-way, and a minimum of 1,500 feet between one billboard and the next. The lot itself has to be large enough to contain the sign's fall zone, defined in Section 702 as 133 percent of the structure's height in every direction, and nothing else, no building, structure, or appurtenance, can sit inside that zone.

Any billboard within 660 feet of a U.S. or state-numbered highway, or beyond 660 feet but still visible and intended to be read from that highway, has to separately comply with the Georgia Outdoor Advertising Act, O.C.G.A. § 32-6-70 et seq., and obtain a state permit before the City will issue a building permit. Where the state act and the local Article conflict, Section 706.07(g)(2) requires compliance with whichever standard is more restrictive on that specific point, and the sign also has to meet the height limit that otherwise applies in its zoning district.
