Vineland, NJ Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 425-78 governs every sign visible from a public street, road, sidewalk or adjoining property in Vineland, and its sign-face-area rules in Subsection I(1) single out limited access highways for special treatment. Subsection I(1)(g) states that, for purposes of the chapter, a limited access highway such as Route 55 is prohibited from having freestanding signage erected along its frontage, while wall signage remains allowed along that frontage under the applicable signage standards otherwise governing wall signs. The chapter reinforces the point in the number-of-signs rules at Subsection I(4)(b): a limited access highway is not counted as a street frontage for purposes of the permitted-number-of-signs allowance, so a property along Route 55 cannot claim an extra freestanding sign allotment for that frontage the way it could for an ordinary street.

Because freestanding signs include ground, pole, pylon and decorative wall-like freestanding structures under the chapter's definitions, none of those forms may be placed facing Route 55; a business fronting the highway is limited to wall signs, awning or canopy signs, and the other permitted sign types that are not classified as freestanding. Any sign erected along the highway frontage still needs a sign zoning permit from the Zoning Officer before installation, and nonconforming freestanding signage that already existed along the corridor cannot be enlarged, relocated or replaced.
