Vineland, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 425-78C's PRIVATE SALE OR EVENT SIGN definition reaches "the private sale of personal property at a person's residence, such as garage sales, rummage sales and the like," as well as private not-for-profit events such as picnics, carnivals or craft shows, but only when the sign is "erected only for a limited period of time." Both the permitted-signs list at Subsection D(12) and the no-permit-required list at Subsection H(10) give the category identical numeric limits: a maximum sign face area of four square feet for a residential property or 32 square feet for a business or industrial property, and a maximum of one sign per street frontage.

The code does not spell out a specific number of days a garage-sale sign may remain posted beyond the "limited period of time" language in the definition itself, so a resident should treat the sign as tied to the duration of the sale or event it advertises rather than as a permanent fixture. Because the sign qualifies as a no-permit category under Subsection H, no application, plot plan or Zoning Officer review is needed before posting one, unlike freestanding commercial signage regulated elsewhere in the same section. The chapter's general applicability clause still reaches any such sign visible from a public street, road or sidewalk or from an adjoining property.
