Arlington Heights regulates garage sale signs as part of its temporary sign provisions. Signs may be displayed on the property where the sale is held during the sale period. Off-site directional signs are generally not permitted in the public right-of-way. Sign size is limited and signs must be removed promptly after the sale ends.
The Village of Arlington Heights permits temporary garage sale signs on the property where the sale is conducted. Signs must be placed on the seller's own property and not in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, street signs, or Village property. The maximum sign size for residential garage sale signs is typically 6 square feet. Signs may be displayed beginning the day before the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Off-site directional signs placed on other private property require the property owner's permission but are not permitted in the right-of-way. No permit is required for garage sale signs that comply with these regulations. The Village's sign ordinance applies content-neutral restrictions, so garage sale signs are subject to the same general temporary sign rules as other non-commercial temporary signage. Signs must not obstruct pedestrian or vehicular sight lines. Signs attached to utility poles or traffic signs are removed by the Village without notice. The Village conducts a community-wide garage sale event annually where additional signage coordination may be provided.
Signs placed in the public right-of-way will be removed by the Village. Signs not removed within 24 hours after the sale may result in a code enforcement notice. Repeated violations may result in fines. Attaching signs to utility poles or public infrastructure is prohibited. Contact Code Enforcement at (847) 368-5200.
