Skokie, IL Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Skokie Village Code Article XV of Chapter 26 governs garage sales, defined in Section 26-711 as a garage, patio, basement or backyard sale of three or more household items held on residential premises and open to the general public. Section 26-713 limits a dwelling unit to three garage sale permits per calendar year, with each sale running no more than three consecutive days; the Village Manager may also designate one Community Wide Garage Sale weekend that does not count against the three-sale limit. Sign placement is governed by Section 26-714.

A maximum of two signs advertising the sale are allowed in the public right-of-way, and no sign or advertisement showing the address, location or direction of a garage sale may be attached to a tree, shrub or pole in any street, parkway or public place. Flags, banners and buntings are prohibited outright in connection with any garage sale. from November 1 through March 31, on each day the sale is held; the permittee is responsible for taking the signs down in a timely manner once the sale ends.

Every sign must display the words Garage Sale along with an adhesive label or other identifier naming the person responsible for placing and removing it, and that name and address must match the address for which the sale was permitted. Signs must be free-standing and cannot exceed four square feet. Section 26-716 separately bars displaying household goods or furnishings for sale on public property or in the public right-of-way, so merchandise itself has to stay on the seller's own premises even though signage may extend into the right-of-way.
