Oak Park, IL Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Village Code § 18-3-6 restricts garage sale advertising to a sign displayed only on the property of the residence where the sale is being conducted, and only during the time the sale is actually in progress. That means a sign cannot go up days ahead of the sale to advertise it in advance, cannot stay up after the sale ends, and cannot be planted on a neighbor's lawn, a street corner, a utility pole, or any other property away from the sale address; the ordinance ties the sign's location directly to the sale's own premises.

The sign is also capped at eight (8) square feet in surface area; larger boards are not allowed under this section. This dovetails with § 18-3-5's rule on where sale merchandise itself can be displayed: personal property may be shown inside the residence, in a garage, a carport, or a rear yard, but not in the front or side yard or in the public right of way, unless seventy five percent (75%) of the residences on both sides of the block have requested a joint garage sale and the Village closes the street for it.

Together, §§ 18-3-5 and 18-3-6 keep both the merchandise and the advertising for a private garage sale on the seller's own property during the sale window, rather than spreading either into the yard setback areas or the public right of way that the Village otherwise regulates. 00 per offense.
