Bloomfield, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 443-36(A) of the Bloomfield Township Code governs signs for garage sales in the Township of Bloomfield, Essex County. No sign advertising or directing customers can be posted anywhere other than the premises where the sale is held, which rules out arrow signs at corners, utility poles or other properties. The sign cannot exceed two feet by two feet. It cannot be placed on the premises earlier than one week before the sale, and it must be removed within 24 hours after the sale has terminated.

The same section limits where the sale itself can happen. Under § 443-36(B), sales are conducted on the premises only in the dwelling, garage, driveway or rear yard. The sign rule is one piece of Chapter 443, Article III, adopted 5-15-2000 by Ord. No. 00-20, which also requires registration with the Community Development Department at $10 per garage sale (§ 443-31), caps a sale at two consecutive calendar days and two sales per premises in a twelve-month period (§ 443-32), and fixes hours at 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (§ 443-35).

The person holding the permit and the owner or tenant of the premises are jointly and severally responsible for good order during the sale (§ 443-34), and the premises are subject to inspection by the Community Development Department, the Chief of Police and the Fire Official. The Community Development Department enforces the article and prosecutes violations before the local municipal court (§ 443-39).
