Eagan, MN Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Eagan's garage sale signage rule sits inside the same subdivision that limits garage sales to three events a year and 72 hours each. Subdivision 24.C requires garage sale signs to comply with the sign ordinance, meaning a garage sale sign is not exempt from the size, placement and construction standards that apply to signs generally under Sec. 11.70; it is layered on top of those general standards rather than replacing them. Subdivision 24.D then addresses off-site placement specifically: a resident may put a garage sale sign on a private property other than the property where the sale itself is happening, such as a corner lot near a subdivision entrance, but only if that property's owner has given permission first.

Subdivision 24.D also sets a hard removal deadline: the sign must come down once the sale ends, so a garage sale sign cannot linger at a neighboring corner or along a nearby road for days or weeks after the sale is over. Because Subd. 24.A and B already cap a household to three sales a year of no more than 72 hours each, the sign rule effectively limits how long any single garage sale sign, on-site or off-site, can legally remain up. Community Development and code enforcement can require immediate removal of a sign left up past the sale or placed without the host property owner's permission.
