Eagan, MN Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Eagan allows up to three garage sales per dwelling unit each calendar year, with each sale held within a consecutive 72-hour period. Garage sale signs are treated as temporary signs for special civic events or garage/neighborhood sales, which the Sign Regulations handout exempts from a sign permit for a period not to exceed 20 days. Garage sale signs must comply with the city's sign code and must be removed and disposed of properly at the end of each sale. Signs may be placed on the property where the sale is held; placement on other private property is allowed only with the permission of that property owner. Eagan's general sign requirements prohibit any sign other than governmental signs from being located within a City-owned public right-of-way (residential name signs on mailboxes or private lampposts are excluded), and no sign may be placed on City-owned public property, railroad right-of-way, or affixed to any utility pole. Signs also may not obstruct driver vision or be noxious, annoying, or hazardous. Because the city directs residents to follow the sign code, avoid the boulevard/right-of-way and stick to private property with permission.
