Gardena, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 18.58.030(C)(2) lets a residential use display temporary signs for a properly permitted garage sale, yard sale or moving sale in lieu of part or all of the real estate and noncommercial message signage otherwise allowed under § 18.58.030(B) and (C)(1). The location restriction is strict: the sign can only be placed on the parcel where the sale is being conducted, so posting directional signs on neighboring lots, street medians or utility poles falls outside this no-permit allowance. Display time is limited to the single day of the sale, from sunrise to sunset, meaning a sign left up overnight or posted days in advance of the sale is not covered.

Section 18.58.030(C)(4) closes off any attempt to stretch this category, stating the subsection does not authorize signs for home or hobby occupations or any commercial message other than real estate and garage sales. Because these signs fall within the no-permit provisions of § 18.58.030, they must also comply with that section's blanket rule that no-permit signs may not be illuminated. A sign posted off the sale parcel, left up past sunset, or advertising anything other than the sale itself loses the no-permit protection and becomes subject to the City's standard sign permit and removal rules.
