Glen Cove, NY Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 162-6 of the tag sale chapter regulates every sign advertising a licensed garage, lawn, attic, or rummage sale in Glen Cove. No more than two signs are allowed per sale, and each one is capped at 24 inches by 12 inches, ruling out the larger yard signs common for open houses or political campaigns. Every sign must be posted on the premises where the sale itself is being conducted, meaning off-site directional signs on street corners or utility poles fall outside what § 162-6 permits, and separately violate the general posting ban in § 165-1 against attaching signs to poles, hydrants, or trees, or the private-property posting rule in § 165-2 that requires the owner's written consent.

Each sign must display the name and address of the person conducting the sale, giving code enforcement and neighbors a way to trace who is responsible for it. Once the sale is over, the seller has 48 hours to take the signs down; leaving them up past that window is itself a separate violation of Chapter 162, distinct from any underlying tag sale license violation. Because the sign rule is part of Chapter 162, it only applies to sales that are otherwise licensed under § 162-2, not to properly zoned commercial advertising, which falls instead under the sign provisions of Chapter 280, Zoning.
