Perth Amboy, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Garage sale signs are governed by item (15) of subsection F in § 430-62 of the Perth Amboy City Code, the sign regulations in the Zoning and Land Development chapter. The item sits in the list of signs permitted in any zone in the City of Perth Amboy without a municipal sign permit, so a resident does not apply to the Zoning Officer. The exemption is written as path marking signs only, meaning signs that lead buyers to the sale, and it carries five conditions.

Count: not more than two signs. Size: each sign not exceeding two square feet. Start: posted no earlier than two days before the beginning of the sale. Removal: taken down the day following the sale. Address: all signs for path marking to garage sales must be provided with the address of the garage sale, so an unmarked arrow does not comply. The item also says the signs cannot be otherwise prohibited in subsection G, which is where placement is decided.

Subsection G(14) prohibits signs placed, attached or supported on awnings, trees, fences, utility poles or light poles, and signs attached to other signs. A garage sale arrow stapled to a utility pole or taped to a street light is therefore not protected by the exemption, however small it is. Subsection G(12) also bans A-type, sandwich-type, sidewalk and curb signs, and G(17) bans signs located within sight triangles, so a sign on a corner has to sit clear of the triangle. Subsection G(9) prohibits portable advertising displays in all districts, except where specifically permitted, and subsection A(1) prohibits any sign not specifically permitted. A resident who wants more than two signs, or a larger one, falls outside the exemption and would need a sign permit that the code does not provide for this use.
