Perth Amboy, NJ Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Political signs are covered by § 430-62 of the Perth Amboy City Code, the sign regulations in the Zoning and Land Development chapter. Item (14) of subsection F lists temporary political signs among the signs permitted in any zone in the City of Perth Amboy without a municipal sign permit. Three conditions are printed: the sign cannot exceed twelve square feet, it must be nonilluminated, and it must be removed ten days after the election. The code prints no separate count limit and no separate rule for residential versus commercial lots, so the size, lighting and removal deadline are the standards that apply everywhere in the city.

The exemption does not override the prohibited sign list in subsection G. Under G(14), signs placed, attached or supported on awnings, trees, fences, utility poles or light poles are prohibited, along with signs attached to other signs. A campaign sign zip-tied to a chain-link fence or stapled to a utility pole is therefore a violation, while a freestanding sign staked on the lot is the form the exemption contemplates. Subsection A(3) adds that no sign can be located in a manner that materially impedes the view of any street or intersection, and G(17) prohibits signs located within sight triangles, so a corner lot needs extra care. Illumination is barred by the exemption's own terms, and colored floodlights or indirect colored illumination are prohibited under subsection E.

Because the ten-day clock starts at the election, the candidate committee, the property owner and the person who posted the sign should all treat that date as the deadline. Signs outside the exempt list, such as a permanent commercial sign, still need a sign permit from the Zoning Officer under subsection B.
