Perth Amboy, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

The rule sits in § 430-62, the sign regulations of the Zoning and Land Development chapter of the Perth Amboy City Code. Temporary window signs are item (12) in subsection F, the list of signs permitted in any zone in the City of Perth Amboy without a municipal sign permit. Four requirements apply to a merchant.

Timing: the sign can be erected or posted up to fourteen days before the event or sale, and it must be removed at the expiration of the event sale for which it was posted. Content: a temporary sale sign must identify the sale start date and end date, so an open-ended banner that names no dates does not qualify. Coverage: no more than fifteen percent of the square footage of any single window or single window display area can be devoted to signs or other advertising material attached to the window or otherwise exposed to public view. That last phrase widens the cap beyond paper taped to glass, because advertising material visible from the street counts toward the fifteen percent. The measure runs per window, so each storefront window or display area is held to its own area.

The permit exemption is the only relief. Subsection A(1) of the same section says any signs not specifically permitted are prohibited, and subsection G bans signs using blinking, flashing, vibrating, flickering, tracer or sequential lighting, so a flashing window sign is barred even during a sale. G also bars signs that obstruct doors, fire escapes or stairways. Signs outside the exempt list need a sign permit from the Zoning Officer under subsection B, which also says a sign inside the Business Improvement District can require review under chapter 374 of the City Code. A denial can be appealed under the same article of the chapter.
