Smyrna, GA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 82-16(1)c of the Smyrna Code allows one yard sale sign on the premises where a yard sale is being held, on the day of the sale only. The Mayor and Council treat yard sale signs as part of the incidental occupation of the residential property and not commercial activity under the sign chapter. Each sign face is capped at eight square feet, and the sign must comply with all other provisions of the chapter. Section 82-2 defines a yard sale sign the same way: an eight square foot sign displayed on the premises on the day of the sale only. Section 82-3(6) lists yard sale signs among the signs that need no sign permit.

Placement rules still apply. Paragraph b of section 82-16(1) requires at least 15 feet between the sign and the sides of the lot, except that a lot less than 60 feet wide is allowed one sign placed no closer than ten feet from the side of the lot. Section 82-14(1) bars any sign within ten feet from the edge of the sidewalk closest to the property, or within 15 feet from the edge of the road where no sidewalk exists. Section 82-12(9) prohibits a snipe sign, which is any sign attached to or placed upon a utility pole or mailbox on public or private property. Section 82-12(10) and (13) prohibit balloons, streamers and pennants except as specifically allowed under section 82-16, and the yard sale paragraph does not list them.

Removal is fast on public property. Under section 82-9(c), signs found on public property without proper permission are subject to removal without prior notice to the sign owner. Signs elsewhere get a written notice by regular mail and ten days to appeal.
