Smyrna, GA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 82-3 of the Smyrna Code lists the signs that need no sign permit, and window signs are item (3): the total sign area cannot exceed 50 percent of the individual window pane. The measure is taken pane by pane, so each pane of a storefront is judged on its own. Section 82-2 defines a window sign as a sign painted upon or affixed so as to be visible through or upon a window. Item (4) separately exempts signs located ten or more feet behind a window or garage bay door opening that are visible through the opening to the outside.

Exempt does not mean unregulated. The lead-in to section 82-3 says these signs must comply with all applicable regulations of the article unless specifically exempted. Section 82-12 bans signs with flashing, intermittent or animated illumination or effect, with a carve-out for time and weather informational signs no larger than 32 square feet. It also bans permanent or temporary signs with missing letters, missing or damaged lenses, or exposed lighting or electrical materials. Section 82-12(16) prohibits electronic signs except as specifically allowed under section 82-16, and section 82-16 allows them only on nonresidentially zoned property, with each static message displayed for no less than 60 seconds.

A window sign covering more than 50 percent of a pane falls outside the exemption. Section 82-4 then makes it unlawful to post, display or erect a sign without a permit. Applications go to the Community Development Department, which has 45 business days from receipt of a completed application and fee to process them, and the fees come from the schedule on record in the city clerk's office.
