West Jordan, UT Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

City Code section 12-2-5(L) places temporary home production and garage sale signs on West Jordan's list of signs that require no sign permit, but the exemption is narrow on two fronts. First, size: the sign cannot be larger than 4 square feet, well under the 8-square-foot allowance the code gives noncommercial signs generally. Second, location: the exemption only reaches signs placed on private property inside a residential zoning district, so a sale sign posted in a commercial or industrial zone, or in the public right-of-way, does not qualify for the exemption even if it meets the size limit.

As with every category listed in section 12-2-5, garage and yard sale signs must still comply with the rest of title 12's sign standards even though they skip the permit step, including the general maintenance rule in section 12-3-1 requiring signs to be kept in good repair and the five-foot clearance around a sign's base free of weeds and trash. Because the code does not set a maximum display period for garage sale signs the way it does for real estate open house signs, the practical limit on how long a resident can leave a sale sign up comes down to whether the underlying garage sale activity itself is still an ongoing, temporary home use rather than a standing advertisement, since a permanently posted sign for a sale that is no longer happening falls outside what the exemption was written to cover.
