West Jordan, UT Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 12-2-5(K) folds window signs into the list of sign types that need no permit from the West Jordan development services department, but the exemption comes with one hard number: no more than 50 percent of the total window area on which a sign sits may be covered. The code defines a window sign broadly, reaching posters, printed messages and displays that are either painted directly onto the glass or simply mounted on the interior side of the window, so temporary paper signage and permanent vinyl lettering are measured under the same 50 percent ceiling.

Because the rule lives among West Jordan's exempt-sign list rather than its permitted-sign standards in section 12-3-2, a business does not file a sign permit application or pay a permit fee to display window signage that stays within the coverage limit. That exemption status does not excuse a business from every other applicable rule; section 12-2-5 opens by noting that exempt signs must still comply with all other provisions of the sign title, including general maintenance, safety and prohibited-sign rules found elsewhere in title 12. A retailer that wraps a storefront in seasonal sale graphics, product posters or a hand-lettered special needs to keep the covered glass under half the window's total area or the display crosses out of the exempt category and becomes subject to permitting as a different sign type.
