Eden Prairie, MN Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Political and other non-commercial yard signs are governed by City Code Section 11.70, the City's general sign regulations, rather than a standalone political-sign ordinance. Subdivision 4.E creates an outright exception to the rest of the section: during a general election year, non-commercial signs of any size may be posted beginning 46 days before the state primary and may remain up until 10 days after the state general election. Ahead of a special election, the posting window opens 13 weeks before the election and closes 10 days after it.

Outside those windows, a non-commercial sign such as a political yard sign is still allowed but is subject to the same size, height and placement standards as other signs permitted in the applicable zoning district, and Subdivision 4.D bars any sign, commercial or not, from being placed in a public right-of-way. Subdivision 2 separately protects the content: the owner of any sign otherwise allowed under Section 11.70 may substitute non-commercial speech for commercial or other non-commercial speech, so a lawful sign structure cannot be forced to carry, or barred from carrying, a political message.

No permit is required for a temporary yard sign under Subdivision 7.B. A sign that violates the section, including one posted outside the election window at a size that would otherwise exceed the district's normal limits, is subject to a written violation notice, and if not corrected within three days it is deemed a nuisance that the City may abate under Minnesota Statutes Chapter 429, with abatement costs assessed against the property.
