Lawton, OK Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Lawton City Code § 18-9-1-908(K), part of the on-premises sign article, treats political signs as their own category distinct from general business or temporary signs. Because they are permitted in all zoning districts, a homeowner in an R-1 neighborhood and a business in a C-5 General Commercial district face the identical size and height limits: a maximum of 32 square feet of sign area and six feet of height, with no portion of the sign allowed to overhang or extend past the property line. Political signs must be built as ground-mounted or pole signs, and subsection 5 flatly bars illumination, unlike several other sign categories in the same article that permit direct or indirect lighting.

The defining feature of the category is its timing rule: subsection 7 lets a political sign go up no more than 60 days before an election, and makes the candidate responsible for taking it down within 30 days after the election. If the candidate does not remove it in that window, responsibility shifts to the property owner, who must then take the sign down. No sign permit is required under subsection 8, so the city does not pre-screen these signs the way it does most other categories in Article 18-9; compliance is instead checked after the fact against the size, height and removal-timing standards.
