Southampton, NY Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 330-205C of the Town Code's sign article sets the operative window-sign standard. Subsection C(1) caps the count at one sign per window or door, with a maximum of two signs on any wall that has more than two windows or doors. Subsection C(2) caps the coverage: a window sign cannot exceed 25% of the area of the window it is affixed to, or 10% of the glass coverage area of the door it is painted or affixed to. A sign that exceeds those dimensions is reclassified as a wall sign and must instead meet the wall-sign standard in Section 330-205A, which caps total wall-sign area at 1.5 square feet per horizontal foot of wall and 75% of the wall's width.

Subsection C(3) bars illumination of window signs outright except as permitted under Section 330-207B, which allows internally lit interior signs only in Highway Business Districts, capped at 10 square feet per business, or a single internally lit window sign of no more than four square feet per public street or parking-lot frontage. Subsection C(5) carves out one more exception: a temporary promotional or announcement sign placed inside a window can run up to 50% of the window's area, double the normal cap, but only for a maximum of 30 consecutive days.

All permitted illuminated signs, window or otherwise, must be extinguished by 11:00 p.m. under Section 330-207C. A window sign that stays within these limits needs no separate area allowance beyond what any wall signs in the same building already use, since Subsection C(4) allows compliant window signs in addition to permitted wall signage.
