Yuba City, CA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Yuba City treats window signs as a distinct category under Article 63 of the sign ordinance. 6314(b) allows permanent or temporary signs painted on, or displayed from, the inside surface of a window, showcase, or similar fixture in addition to whatever signage the property already carries under its zone district allowance, but caps all such window signage, temporary and permanent combined, at 35% of the total window area. Window coverings such as tinted or frosted films do not count against that limit as long as the film carries no advertising message.

6305(p): a window sign limited strictly to hours of operation, address, occupancy, or emergency information does not count toward a site's total sign area and needs no Planning permit at all, provided it is mounted no higher than the second story and stays under three square feet. 6304, requires a zone clearance reviewed by the Development Services Department before installation. 6306(b), a rule that expressly reaches window signs and window lighting. Businesses along State Route 99, Colusa Highway (State Route 20), and other commercial corridors most often trip this cap with promotional posters or paper banners covering storefront glass; once the covered area crosses the one-third mark of the window, the business is technically out of compliance even if each individual poster looks modest.
