Lafayette, IN Soliciting & Door-to-Door: No-Knock Registry (2026)

Lafayette Municipal Code § 4.09.100 lists conduct that is "a violation of this chapter for anyone licensed under this chapter." Subsection A bars in-person door-to-door sales, or attempts to sell to prospective customers, before 8:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m. Subsection B separately bars ringing the bell or knocking at any door of any building where a sign reading "No solicitors or peddlers," or words to that effect, has been posted, meaning residents who post such a sign are legally off-limits regardless of the hour.

The same section adds further limits: licensees may not impede pedestrian or vehicular traffic or block sightlines on a street, alley, sidewalk or right of way (C), may not sell to occupants of a motor vehicle (D), may not use a sound-amplifying device to sell or attract attention (E), may not act in an unlawful or disorderly manner (F), and may not engage in any other activity threatening public health, safety or welfare (G). Because these rules attach to the license issued under Chapter 4.09, a violation exposes the licensee to license suspension or revocation by the City Controller under § 4.09.110, in addition to the chapter's general fine.

The Lafayette Police Department is the enforcing agency, since § 4.09.090 already requires licensees to carry and produce their license to police or a customer on request.
