Lafayette, IN Soliciting & Door-to-Door: Solicitor Permits (2026)

Lafayette Municipal Code § 4.09.020 makes it unlawful for any person to engage in the business of peddler or solicitor within the city without an unrevoked license valid at the time of the activity. "Peddler" and "solicitor" are defined in § 4.09.010 to cover anyone traveling house to house or along city streets selling goods, taking orders for future delivery, or soliciting services, whether or not a sample is carried or payment is collected in advance. Applications go to the City Controller and must list the applicant's home address, driver's license number, vehicle description if one is used, the location and duration of the business, the type of goods or services offered, and any felony or misdemeanor convictions, plus two 2-inch by 2-inch photographs taken within 60 days.

The Police Department investigates every applicant and can recommend denial; a felony conviction within the preceding seven years, or a misdemeanor for fraud, deceit, dishonesty, battery, or repeat alcohol or drug offenses within five years, makes an applicant ineligible under § 4.09.050. The license fee is $200 under § 4.09.070, and § 4.09.080 sets the license term at 180 days from issuance. Licensees must carry the license and produce it on request of police or a customer under § 4.09.090. The Controller may suspend or revoke a license for fraud in the application, a violation of the chapter, a felony conviction, or conduct that breaches the peace, with an appeal available to the Board of Public Works and Safety filed with the City Clerk within seven days.
