Old Bridge, NJ Soliciting & Door-to-Door: Solicitor Permits (2026)

Section 347-2 sets the core rule: no person may engage in the usual activities of solicitor, peddler, auctioneer, junk dealer or used car dealer without first obtaining a license from the Township Clerk. Section 347-3 fills in the application process: the written application goes to the Clerk on a Township form stating the applicant's name, the business name and the applicant's residence, and every applicant must register with the Police Department and be fingerprinted and photographed for identification. Anyone using a licensed vehicle must also file an insurance certificate showing at least $100,000 in liability coverage.

Fees are set by § 347-4 and run by category: solicitors pay $25 for each additional person, peddlers and solicitors using a vehicle pay $100, auctioneers pay $100 per auction, junk dealers and junkyard keepers pay $1 per square foot with a $100 minimum, and motor vehicle sales lots pay $500 under 5,000 square feet or $750 above that; frozen dessert trucks pay $100. All licenses expire at year's end regardless of when they were issued, and the Township keeps 25% of the fee on any application it rejects.

An applicant denied a license can appeal to the Township Council within 14 days of the mailed denial notice under § 347-3(C), and the Council holds a hearing after at least five days' mailed notice before affirming, reversing or modifying the Clerk's decision. Peddlers get no exclusive right to any location and cannot operate from a fixed spot in a congested area under § 347-5, at the judgment of the police officer on scene.
