Irvington, NJ Special Events & Permits: Park Event Permits (2026)

Township Code § 428-17 sets the procedure for park special-event permits. An applicant must file with the Director stating name and address, the sponsoring organization if any, the requested day and hours, the specific park area, and any variances needed from park rules. Under § 428-17A(2), the Director grants a permit only upon finding the activity will not unreasonably interfere with the public's enjoyment of the park, will not detract from public health, welfare, safety and recreation, will not induce violence, crime or disorderly conduct, will not impose extraordinary or burdensome expense on the Township including police protection, and that the requested facility has not already been reserved for another use at that date and hour.

Section 428-17B requires the Director to notify the applicant in writing within 10 days of the decision; a denial must include the reason, and an aggrieved applicant may appeal by serving written notice on the Township Clerk within five business days, with a copy to the Director, who forwards the matter to the Municipal Council for a hearing within 14 days of the Clerk's receipt of the appeal. Section 428-17D requires proof of liability insurance covering injuries to the public before any activity begins, in amounts the Director sets.

The Director may revoke a permit under § 428-17E for a rule or ordinance violation or other good cause shown. This permit scheme sits within Chapter 428, Article I, General Regulations (adopted September 25, 1984 by Ord. No. MC 2747), with the Department of Parks and Recreation as the designated approving agency under § 428-2.
