Piscataway, NJ Special Events & Permits: Sidewalk Dining & Cafés (2026)

The Zoning Ordinance treats an outdoor sidewalk cafe as an accessory feature of a restaurant rather than a use that can stand on its own. In the TC, Towne Center Zone, Section 21-32.1b(7) lists 'Sidewalk cafes associated with permitted restaurants' among the district's accessory uses, alongside kiosks, street furniture, planters and trash and recycling receptacles. In the TV, Transit Village Zone, Section 21-26.2a(3)(3) folds sidewalk cafes into the principal commercial use category for 'Restaurants and taverns, including sidewalk cafes, drive-in restaurants.' Because the cafe is defined as accessory to or part of the restaurant use, a restaurant operator in either district does not need a separate use variance to add sidewalk seating, but the seating area is still subject to the Township Planning Board's site plan approval for the underlying development, including the Towne Center Zone's design guidelines for architectural theme, signage and streetscape features under Sections 21-32.3 and 21-32.13.

Outside the TC and TV Zones, the Zoning Ordinance's use lists reviewed for this record do not carry a parallel sidewalk cafe accessory-use listing, so a restaurant elsewhere in the Township would need to confirm its own district's accessory-use table before placing tables and chairs on the sidewalk.
