Pool barriers must be at least 60 inches (5 feet) high. Access gates must open away from the pool, be self-closing, and have self-latching devices no lower than 60 inches from the ground. Gaps in the barrier may not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Outside surfaces must be free of handholds or footholds enabling a child under 5 to climb. New or remodeled pools require at least two drowning prevention safety features. Alternatives include ASTM F2286 mesh pool fencing and ASTM F1346 safety pool covers. Vista refers residents to its Pool and Spa Requirement handout for detailed barrier specifications.
