Old Bridge, NJ Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

Old Bridge Township's Construction Code Office issues the permit required for any in-ground or aboveground residential pool under the State Uniform Construction Code. Township Code Section 108-4 states that the fee for a construction permit is the sum of the applicable subcode fees, due before the permit is issued, and prices pool installation at $250 for an in-ground pool or spa and $150 for an aboveground pool under Section 108-4.B(4). Beyond the building permit, Section 250-50G of the Land Development chapter lets an aboveground or in-ground pool on a single-family lot encroach into the minimum rear or side yard accessory-structure setback, or into the front yard on a corner lot that does not face the street, provided a minimum six-foot distance is kept between the pool wall of an aboveground pool, or the pool water of an in-ground pool, and the affected property line.

Every pool also triggers the Township's pool-fencing rule at Section 164-9: fences around swimming pools must meet the requirements of the Swimming Pool Safety Devices section of the New Jersey State Uniform Construction Code, which governs barrier height, self-closing gates and alarm requirements for the pool enclosure. Applicants file with the Division of Code Enforcement in the Department of Community Development, and the Construction Official coordinates plan review across the building, electrical and, where applicable, plumbing subcodes before signing off on the installation.
