Darlington County, SC Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Darlington County Code § 50-41(a)(1) governs how residential solid waste generated in the county reaches the county's transfer station. Subsection a. authorizes curbside/mailbox collection: licensed contract haulers and units of general purpose local government may provide roll-out carts with lids for curbside/mailbox or behind-the-house collection of residential solid waste. Only waste actually generated within Darlington County may be brought to the county transfer station under this residential service option; waste from outside the county is barred except under an approved regional agreement. The county administrator retains authority to issue additional exclusions or handling requirements on top of any wastes already prohibited by regulation, so that cart-based collection stays consistent with good environmental and management practices.

Where a resident is not served by curbside/mailbox pickup, subsection b. instead routes waste to a manned recycling and solid waste convenience station operated by the county or its agent, open to county generators and tourists and requiring identification on request. Transportation of collected waste is separately regulated under § 50-41(b): collection vehicles must be kept sanitary, built to prevent leakage or blowing waste, marked with the hauler's name, vehicle capacity and county dumping permit number, and covered while in transit.
