Darlington County, SC Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Darlington County Code § 50-43(a)(2) prohibits placing yard waste, used oil, lead-acid batteries, special or industrial waste, or improperly contained nonhazardous medical waste inside any container meant to collect approved solid waste, whether that is a curbside pickup container or a household waste container at a solid waste and recycling convenience station. Section 50-39 defines yard trash as solid waste consisting solely of vegetative matter, such as leaves, branches and clippings, resulting from landscaping maintenance. Because yard trash cannot go into the general trash stream, § 50-41(a)(1)b directs it instead to the county's manned recycling and solid waste convenience stations, which are open to county solid waste generators and tourists and require presenting a driver's license and vehicle registration on request by environmental services staff, code and litter officers, or law enforcement.

Under the county's annual fee schedule (§ 2-412(7)), yard debris dropped off by non-municipal haulers is charged $42.00 per ton, though the county's flat $70.00 annual recycling/solid waste service charge covers routine residential drop-off access. Enforcement of the container-separation rule follows § 50-43(b): duly authorized law enforcement and code enforcement officers of the county and state are charged with enforcing these rules, and license violations by contract haulers are penalized under § 50-42(f).
