Carts for gray container waste, green container organic waste, dark blue container waste and light blue recyclables must be placed in the street gutter immediately adjacent to the curb and immediately adjacent to the generator's property, and in no event on the sidewalk. Carts must sit a minimum of three feet apart from each other and from any other object. on collection day itself. on the day following collection. Where a container is collected from somewhere other than curbside, that location cannot be more than seventy-five feet from the street. 040(c) separately guarantees at least one receptacle per dwelling unit except where the city allows shared communal bins in a multifamily property or under a permitted sharing or self-haul arrangement.

Improper cart placement or set-out timing under Section 32.01.050 is enforced under Section 32.01.125. The code compliance administrator issues a notice of violation, giving sixty days to correct it before the violation becomes an infraction: one hundred dollars for a first offense, two hundred dollars for a second within six months, and five hundred dollars for a third or later offense within a year. The city may instead use the administrative citation procedure in Article 1.02.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early can I put my trash cart out in Davis?
Not before 5:00 p.m. the day before your scheduled collection day, and not later than 6:00 a.m. on collection day itself, under Municipal Code Section 32.01.050(a)(3). You then have until 7:00 a.m. the following day to bring the empty cart back in.
Can I put my cart on the sidewalk instead of the curb?
No. Section 32.01.050(a)(1) requires carts to sit in the street gutter immediately next to the curb and never on the sidewalk. The public works director can permit placement on top of the curb in limited cases, but that requires a written, revocable permit.
How far apart do my carts need to be?
Carts must be spaced at least three feet from each other and from any other object under Section 32.01.050(a)(3), and that same subsection also fixes the set-out and pickup window for collection day.
