Jackson, MS Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Bin placement in Hinds County is governed by municipal code. Jackson Code Chapter 86 requires residents to place carts at the curb or alley edge on the morning of their assigned collection day with lids fully closed so waste is contained. Bins should face the street with handles toward the house, spaced at least 3 feet apart and at least 3 feet from parked vehicles, mailboxes, trees, utility poles, and water meters to allow automated truck arms clearance. Bins must be removed from the curb within 12 to 24 hours of collection and stored out of public view between pickups (in a garage, side yard, or behind a screening fence). Leaving bins visible from the street between pickups is a code violation in Jackson's residential zones. Clinton Code Chapter 50 has similar rules with stricter enforcement in historic and conservation districts. Overflowing bins with the lid propped open will not be collected in many routes. Jackson's historic districts (Belhaven, Fondren, Farish Street) require bins to be especially discrete to protect neighborhood aesthetics.
