Jackson, MS Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

The city's yard-waste rules sit inside § 106-117, which governs how residents must prepare and store trash for collection generally, and specifically § 106-117(a)(2) for green waste. Discarded tree branches, shrubbery, leaves, yard clippings and pine straw can either be bagged or containerized, or simply placed out loose at the curb, but the pile cannot exceed a volume of two cubic yards, which the ordinance equates to 54 cubic feet. Tree limbs in that pile are capped at four inches in diameter; anything thicker falls outside routine yard-waste pickup.

Collection timing runs through § 106-116. Leaves, yard clippings, paper, straw and other flexible material placed in a container under § 106-117 go out on the city's first collection day of the week, as designated by the director or a designee. Containerized yard debris follows the same first-day schedule. Loose, noncontainerized yard debris that still meets the § 106-117(a)(2) volume cap is instead picked up on the second collection day of the week, alongside regular containerized garbage. Material that exceeds these limits, such as logs and limbs from commercial, contracted, or major tree-trimming operations, is excluded from city collection service entirely under § 106-116(b)(2); the property owner or the contractor who generated it must pay for its disposal. Residents with an oversized job, a storm-damaged tree or a landscaper's trim-out should plan for private hauling rather than relying on the curb.
