Costa Mesa Sanitary District provides free large item curbside collection for residential customers through the Large Item Collection Program. Residents may schedule pickups for furniture, appliances, mattresses, and other bulky items that do not fit in standard carts. Pickups are scheduled based on availability and may occur one or more weeks from the request date. Hazardous materials, construction debris, and e-waste are not accepted through this program.
The Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD) offers a free Large Item Collection Program for residential solid waste customers. Eligible items include furniture, mattresses, box springs, large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, water heaters), carpet rolls, and other bulky household items that cannot fit in standard carts. Residents schedule pickups by contacting CMSD at (949) 645-8512 or through their online request system. Pickups are scheduled based on availability and typically occur within one to two weeks of the request. Items must be placed curbside by 6:00 AM on the scheduled collection day. Items should not block sidewalks, driveways, or fire hydrants. CMSD does not collect hazardous materials, construction and demolition debris, dirt, concrete, tires, or e-waste through this program. E-waste including televisions, computers, and monitors can be taken to Orange County household hazardous waste collection events or permanent facilities. Construction debris must be hauled to an approved landfill by the property owner or contractor. Costa Mesa residents also have access to the OC Waste and Recycling household hazardous waste collection centers for paint, chemicals, batteries, and other hazardous materials. CMSD hosts periodic community cleanup events offering additional disposal opportunities.
Illegal dumping of bulky items on public property, in alleys, or on vacant lots is a misdemeanor under Costa Mesa Municipal Code. Fines for illegal dumping start at $1,000 and may include cleanup cost recovery. Leaving items at the curb outside of a scheduled pickup may result in a code enforcement notice and administrative citation.
