Kill Devil Hills, NC Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Under Town Code Sec. 32, the Public Services Department picks up bulk household items town-wide on a fall and spring schedule it sets each year within the windows of October 15 to November 15 and April 15 to May 15. Residents must separate their pile into tree limbs and branches, bagged yard waste, white goods and metal items such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, bicycles with the tires removed, metal lawn furniture and grills, plus cables and pipe under twelve feet, and large furniture such as sofas, beds and mattresses.

The section spells out ten categories of banned material: hazardous items like antifreeze, oil, paint and batteries; recyclables including cardboard, paper and electronics; construction and demolition debris such as carpeting, flooring, cabinets, toilets, tubs, drywall, lumber, pallets, shingles, windows, brick, concrete, asphalt or glass; glass, televisions, mirrors and fluorescent tubes; vehicles, boats, trailers, motorcycles, lawnmowers, weedeaters and propane heaters; tires; tree stumps; debris from clearing unimproved lots; anything too large for town crews to safely handle; and any bulk trash generated by a contracted service rather than the resident.

Residents who need to dispose of large items outside the twice-yearly pickup can use the town's dry trash drop-off yard under the separate permit system in Sec. 31, which sorts accepted material into white goods and metals, non-recyclable glass, furniture and construction debris, up to one wheelbarrow load of brick, concrete or asphalt, tree limbs and yard waste, and gas-powered equipment with the tank removed; a special-use permit is available for disabled or infirm owners who cannot haul their own trash, reviewed case by case by Public Services and valid for 30 days.
