Novi, MI Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Chapter 16, Article IV defines solid waste in Sec. 16-61 to include garbage, trash, refuse, rubbish, ashes and animal waste generated at residential premises, plus bulk items, Christmas trees and small quantities of construction and demolition debris. Tree, plant and vegetation trimmings and branches are specifically included as solid waste when they are greater than 2 inches but not more than 6 inches in diameter, no longer than 4 feet, bundled and tied, with each bundle capped at 50 pounds. The definition expressly excludes hazardous waste, medical waste, human body waste, tires, motor vehicle parts and batteries, and other categories regulated separately by state statute, so those items cannot go out with bulk trash.

Under Sec. 16-63(b), ordinary yard waste can either be composted on-site in a way that does not create a nuisance, or set at the curb for pickup under the city's published collection rules; a landscaping business removing yard waste from a job site must dispose of it lawfully, by composting, delivering it to the designated hauler, or taking it outside the city. Once bulk items or recyclables are placed at the curb under the article, they become the property of the designated waste hauler, and it is a violation for anyone other than the city's contracted hauler to collect them, per Sec. 16-63(c).
