Novi, MI Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

City Code Section 16-62 sets the baseline pickup rule: all solid waste and recyclable materials from a site of generation must be stored and placed for pickup at the times and in the manner provided in rules and regulations adopted by duly published city council resolution, so the actual collection day, cart placement and container specifications live in a council resolution rather than the printed chapter (Section 16-66). That same section makes noncompliance with the published rules and regulations a violation of the article in its own right.

Certain items get special treatment inside the printed code: Section 16-61 defines solid waste to include bulk items and Christmas trees, plus tree, plant and vegetation trimmings between two and six inches in diameter, no longer than four feet, bundled and tied in bundles under fifty pounds. Hazardous waste, defined to include ignitable, reactive, corrosive or toxic household materials and batteries, can never be set at the curb; Section 16-70 bars any person from knowingly placing it there and bars the hauler from knowingly collecting it.

Only the city's designated, competitively bid waste hauler may collect residential solid waste and recyclables; Section 16-68 makes it unlawful for anyone else to haul waste in Novi without a city contract, on top of any required state or city licenses and permits. Community Development and the Department of Public Works administer the contract on the city's behalf, while the Novi Police Department can cite violations as civil infractions.
