Perth Amboy, NJ Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 243-1 of the Perth Amboy City Code defines bulk items as large waste such as appliances, furniture and electronics, and any other item that will not completely fit into a container with a capacity of 32 gallons when capped, covered or contained. Animal and vegetable wastes and construction and demolition waste are not bulk items. The Director of Public Works publishes written guidelines on multi-component articles that count as a single bulk item.

Under § 243-3(B), every resident of a single-family, two-family or multifamily dwelling must schedule an appointment before putting anything on the curb. Appointments can be made in person at the Public Works office or online through the City's website. The resident files a written request on the appropriate form and pays the fee, then places the items at curbside, preferably before 7:00 a.m. on the day of pickup but no earlier than one hour before sunset of the day before the scheduled collection.

The fee is $30 and is non-refundable. In-person payment is by check or money order only, payable to the City of Perth Amboy, and online payment is by credit or debit card. Each address, counted by lot and block number, gets two bulk item collections per calendar year. Refrigerators and freezers must comply with federal regulations on chlorofluorocarbon removal, and all doors must be removed from appliances scheduled for bulk collection.

Under § 243-11, bulky items can sit at the curb in front of the premises only when an appointment has been scheduled with Public Works, and they cannot block or impede traffic. Bulk waste is also excluded from the automated green cart under § 243-3(C).
