Single-family San Ramon households receive two free bulky-item pickups per year through Waste Management. Residents schedule in advance, place items curbside the morning of pickup, and limit each pickup to roughly three cubic yards. E-waste, mattresses, and appliances are accepted; hazardous waste is not.
Waste Management provides on-call bulky item collection for single-family residents under the San Ramon franchise agreement. Each account receives two (2) complimentary pickups per calendar year; additional pickups are available for a fee. Residents must schedule at least 48 hours in advance by calling WM at (925) 603-1144 or using wmcontracosta.com. Items must be placed curbside by 6:00 AM on the scheduled day, in the same location as regular carts, and separated from regular collection to avoid confusion. Volume limit per pickup is roughly three cubic yards (approximately a pickup-truck load) or up to five items, whichever is less; items must be individually handleable by two collection workers (under 150 pounds each) or disassembled. Accepted items: furniture (couches, chairs, tables, mattresses - mattresses are recycled under California's used mattress recovery program), large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers - freon units accepted), televisions and electronics (CRTs and flat-screens), carpet (rolled, tied, under 4 ft lengths), small amounts of scrap wood. Not accepted in bulky pickup: hazardous waste, paint, motor oil, propane tanks, construction debris, dirt/concrete/rock, tires (take to tire retailer for disposal fee), car parts, ammunition. Multi-family complexes coordinate bulky pickups through property management. Illegal dumping of bulky items on the curb outside a scheduled pickup is a code enforcement violation and can result in citations up to $1,000 plus cleanup costs.
