San Ramon, CA Trash & Recycling: Mandatory Organics Recycling (2026)

Section B6-2(A)(2) makes organics collection one of three mandatory streams, alongside solid waste and recyclables, for every occupied property in San Ramon; a property can only skip the green bin with a Director-approved waiver under subsection D. 5 requires generators to keep source-separated organic materials out of the solid waste and recycling containers and bars 'Prohibited Container Contaminants' from any of the three bins. 9(b); businesses that bought non-conforming containers before January 1, 2022 do not have to replace them until January 1, 2036. Container labeling describing what belongs in each bin has been required on new containers since January 1, 2022.

Landlords must give new tenants education on the sorting rules within 14 days of move-in and must provide organics and recycling access to every tenant who gets a trash container. A commercial business can get a De Minimis Waiver from the organics requirement only if its disposed organic material is under 20 gallons a week for accounts with two or more cubic yards of weekly solid waste service, or under 10 gallons a week for smaller accounts, and it must tell the Director if that volume later grows past the threshold.

Failing to source-separate organics, like failing to subscribe to service at all, is enforced as an infraction under Section B6-3, and the City Manager or Authorized Collector can use remote container monitoring under Section B6-4 to check compliance.
