Margate, FL Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 19-11(a) of the Margate Code makes garbage service compulsory for residential dwelling units and puts the cost on the owner. The minimum package, as designated in the city's exclusive franchise agreement, is two garbage pickups per week, one pickup per week of source separated recyclables, regularly scheduled bulky waste pickup and regularly scheduled yard trash pickup. Section 19-7(g) adds that single-family garbage and trash collections occur at least twice a week with curbside pickups at least 72 hours apart, unless the city manager decides otherwise. Multifamily communities also get at least two collections a week, and so do commercial establishments with garbage, unless an enclosed compactor container is in use, in which case service occurs as necessary. Commercial establishments generating only trash get one collection per week. Bulky waste and yard waste run once per week on the scheduled day under Section 19-8.

Under Section 19-6, collection runs between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with no collections on Sunday, and the city manager can modify times and days in certain areas due to noise or other concerns. Sections 19-3 and 19-5 tie the schedule to one exclusive franchise: the city awards a single contractor the residential and commercial work, and a copy of the franchise sits in the city clerk's office. Owner-occupied multifamily communities sit outside that franchise and use non-exclusive franchise haulers instead.

Section 19-11(f) lets the city require more frequent collections or larger containers when the service becomes insufficient in the city's judgment or a detriment to the health, safety or welfare of the community, with the owner paying. It also preserves the city's power to require a special collection where garbage and trash is placed at curbside earlier than 5:00 p.m. of the day preceding scheduled collection.
