Southaven, MS Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Sec. 7-3 reserves the business of collecting, removing and disposing of garbage and rubbish in the City of Southaven to the city itself. The one exception is narrow: private collectors specifically authorized to serve nonresidential collection. A household cannot hire a private hauler in place of city service for its garbage. The city sanitation department operates under the public works director (Sec. 7-2), and the director holds jurisdiction over the removal and final disposition of all refuse from premises in the city (Sec. 7-4). The director can also write administrative rules, subject to approval of the mayor and Board of Aldermen (Sec. 7-5).

Sec. 7-11 covers the money. The mayor and Board of Aldermen set collection fees by resolution, and the Board can assess the cost to tax millage approved by the voters in place of any monthly fee. Fees are based on one cart per customer per address. A property must use an additional cart when regularly occurring amounts of garbage exceed the first cart's capacity, and the code defines regularly occurring as more frequently than three times during a three-month period. City personnel are not authorized to collect garbage that is not in a proper city-owned receptacle. A property can also request an extra cart at the director's discretion, and every cart beyond the first is charged to the owner's monthly utility bill at a rate the Board sets.

Title VII does not print collection weekdays. Sec. 7-7 and Sec. 7-23 refer to each premises' regularly scheduled collection day, and Sec. 7-7 provides that a commercial dumpster is required where three or more tenants share a property or more than two garbage carts are needed.
