Southaven, MS Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Sec. 7-10(a) sets the container rules for yard waste in the City of Southaven. Leaves, grass cuttings and garden trimmings, weeds, and roots from which all dirt has been removed go in disposable containers, are not placed in carts, and are placed adjacent to the front property line (curb). Acceptable containers are cardboard cartons, plastic bags or moisture-resistant paper bags. Each must have tops, ties or other means of preventing spillage, scattering or blowing away, must be moisture proof or kept dry, and must be strong enough to hold the material without spillage during handling. No container can exceed the approximate capacity of a thirty-gallon regulation garbage container, which the code treats as the maximum size for manual lifting by a collector.

Sec. 7-10(e) is the flip side: gasoline, solvents, hot ashes, dirt, bricks, concrete, leaves, limbs, grass cuttings and garden trimmings are strictly prohibited from being placed in the cart. Sec. 7-10(d) adds that garbage is drained of liquids before it goes in the cart.

Sec. 7-15(a) covers people who perform routine and natural trimming of shrubs or grass. The city removes what is placed for collection if it sits on the same property it was cut or trimmed from. If it is left on other property, disposal is the responsibility of the contractor or the owner or occupant of the premises where it was placed. Trees cut as non-routine work fall under Sec. 7-15(b) instead, with removal by the owner or occupant within seven (7) days.
